Thankyou to our Guest Speakers on Monday 5 June 2006 for an inspiring and empowering talk – Luz Guevara, Assistant Youth Worker, Cringila Community Co-operative and Blanca Azabal, Multicultural Health Worker & TAFE Teacher. Luz is originally from El Salvador and Blanca is originally from Spain.
Participants asked a series of open questions that had previously been developed in the whole group. The answers gained showed participants that learning is the key to self discovery, knowledge and empowerment. Starting a course can lead to a lifelong learning journey.

I was very happy listening to both Guest Speakers Comments because they are both new
Australians which is very important to them learning English and also gaining all
their qualifications.

Blanca and Luz shared about how they came to Australia as young women, with no English speaking skills, and no real skills either. They were faced with the challenge of fitting in to society here and to carve out a life in Australia for themselves.
It was encouraging to hear the stories of non English speaking migrant women, working in factories had carved out their careers in the health and welfare field. they are not stopping here, incredibly, both are further enhancing their careers through educational pathways. Both women also had furthered their future as sole parents which I find a victorious effort.Who am I to say I can’t do this .. or I can’t do that?

I was very impressed with Blanca and Luz coming to Australia when they were young with no English skills. They were determined to learn at TAFE and they have both inspired me with their goals and set themselves up with a great career.Good on you girls!!
